What happens during a Comprehensive Eye Exam?

During the exam a number of tests are performed to determine which areas of your vision, if any, require treatment or need to be examined more fully. Dr. Negahban will evaluate your eyesight using several complex, but non-invasive, techniques. Included in the comprehensive eye examination will be use of a computerized monitor to determine the precision of your vision, screening for glaucoma, color-blindness tests, checking for astigmatism, and both near and far-sightedness. In addition, Dr. Negahban will take the time to listen to any concerns you may have about your vision.

What happens if any of the tests indicates a problem?

To make a final diagnosis, Dr. Negahban may perform more tests to determine the exact nature of the problem and determine a course of action to best treat the condition. Dr. Negahban will discuss with you how he thinks your issue should be handled, taking into account your individual needs. Some treatments are relatively simple and can be completed during your examination visit, while others will require another appointment.

What is LASIKS?

Laser In-Situ Keratomileusis, or LASIK, is a safe procedure developed to improve your vision by lowering your prescription. The treatment is done by creating a small flap from a thin, superficial layer of the cornea and correcting the refractive error the flap is causing. Once the corrections and reshaping of the flap have been completed, the flap is then placed back on the eye.

Flapless LASIK surgery, or Surface Ablation (PRK and LASEK) is a similar, alternative procedure usually performed on patients whose corneas are too thin for the surgery to be done on a flap. This procedure is very safe since no flap is needed, although ittakes a bit longer for vision to stabilize compared to LASIK. Dr. Negahban has performed several thousands of vision correction procedures on patients ranging from his family members and good friends to physicians, law enforcement officers, boxers, and successful entrepreneurs.

All of these procedures are virtually painless and take approximately ten minutes per eye.

Will I still need eyeglasses or contacts after LASIKS?

Your vision following the treatment depends on many factors. The extent of your original refractive error as well as your vision needs are important considerations that need to be taken into account. The goal of the procedure is to reduce your dependence on glasses or contact lenses. However, due to healing variations among patients, you may still need some form of correction after laser vision correction to see near or far.

What are the risks and side-effects of LASIKS?

Most of the common side-effects of LASIKS are mild and short-lived. Some side-effects include temporary fluctuations in vision for a few days following the surgery or glare from lights in dark rooms or during the night. The eyes may also be drier than normal, but like the other effects, this typically fades away within two weeks.
As with any surgical procedure, risks are possible, but unlikely. Attention needs to be taken to prevent infection, which can damage your cornea and lead to a loss of vision. Before undergoing this or any other procedure, Dr. Negahban will discuss all the risks with you and will make sure that you fully understand them as part of determining the best course of action to take with your treatment.

What should I know about cataracts?

Cataracts can form in one or both eyes and can result from simple aging, trauma, or other causes. A cataract may interfere with your reading, may cause halos to appear around light sources, or can make it difficult to drive at night or see in dim light. While there are different types of cataracts, the Easton Eye Consultants, can treat all of them and restore your vision. Additionally, Dr. Negahban has been one of the leading surgeons in Massachusetts to implant the advanced premium Intraocular Lenses (IOL) which restore both your distance as well as your intermediate and near vision. Examples of these IOL’s are the ReSTOR IOL, and Crystalens HD.
