FLAPLESS LASIK

LASIK eye surgery requires that there is enough corneal material to permit a flap to be made and be gently lifted. To complete the procedure, the material of the eye under the flap is sculpted to achieve improvements in vision, following which the flap is gently returned to its place and left to heal.

Flapless eye surgery is a very different procedure, although it also results in excellent corrected vision that eliminates the need for eyeglasses or external contact lenses. Flapless eye surgery is also known as photorefractive keratectomy or PRK, LASEK, or Surface Ablation and involves ablation of the eye's surface by an excimer laser.

Photorefractive Keratectomy (PRK) or LASEK

This type of corrective treatment is excellent for those whose corneas are too thin or irregularly shaped to benefit from traditional LASIK procedures. Recovery time from a flapless eye surgery procedure is slightly longer than from LASIK surgery, and those undergoing this treatment should still expect two to three days of mild tears, sensitivity to light, and even some limited discomfort.

Similar to LASIK, the procedure is classified as relatively painless and performed as an outpatient procedure outside of a hospital. Eye drops are used as a local anesthetic and the procedure is very quick. Following a short rest period, the patient is able to return home and more fully recover with a clear, neutral contact lens covering and protecting the treated eye for a few days. Special medications and eye drops are frequently prescribed during this time to keep the patient as comfortable as possible.

Dr. Negahban of Easton Eye Consultants is fully experienced and qualified to perform this flapless LASIK procedure and many other courses of treatment. He has successfully treated thousands of people like yourself whose poor or hampered vision was reducing their quality of life.
